His film Memento (2000) was a psychological thriller which created a character with anterograde amnesia which renders his brain unable to store new memories. We follow this character through the journey of him trying to find the man who killed and raped his wife; however the catch is that the main character, Leonard Shelby, has to wake up every morning not knowing what has happened and where he is. When important information is brought to light Leonard tattoos the information on his body so he never forgets the reason he is where he is today. We are taken through the journey of this search with different opinions of the characters involved but when we finally reach a conclusion we are left to create our own reality and whether or not we believe what has came to light.
Another film by Christopher Nolan was The Prestige (2006) a mystery thriller that really did have you following the plot closely to work out whether or not what you were seeing was the truth. The film is set in the 19th century and we follow two rival magicians who try and create the best stage illusion the world has ever know, however by doing this some terrible consequences occur. The story of love is embedded throughout the plot and we see wives and mistresses of the two magicians, which in the end turns out to be key in the mystery of how the character Alfred Borden managed his amazing magic trick. The story unravels throughout and reveals how the rival character Robert Angier perfects his magic trick and reveals wonder, real magic and twists.
The most recent film produced by Christopher Nolan was Inception (2010) which was a science-fiction action film. We follow Dom Cobb who is a specialised spy whose work consists of secretly extracting valuable information from the unconscious mind of his target while they are asleep and in a dream state. Made an outcast of his home he is unable to see his children, however when a chance arises for him to get his old life back he undergoes the risky job of inception, which is the planting of an idea into a targets subconscious mind. The ending leaves the viewer to make their own conclusion and belief in whether or not Dom Cobb had actually made it home.
The films that Christopher Nolan produces leave the viewer encapsulated in the events that are unfolding throughout the film. There are many different conclusions that can be met or imagined by the audience. Nolan’s plots and themes which run throughout the film take the viewer on a journey through the surreal and he therefore leaves his own personal mark on any films that he has produced by allowing the viewers to create their own opinions and in some cases their own endings.
